Когда приходит время, когда контроллер в моей программе javafx вызывает мой метод чтения Excel, я получаю эту ошибку:

А вот снимок экрана файла Excel, который я сгенерировал, если вам нужно увидеть форматирование (в нем только одна запись, это потому, что я 'Я действительно в настоящее время сосредоточен на том, чтобы заставить читателя читать что-нибудь прямо сейчас.).

Причина, по которой вы сталкиваетесь с проблемой указателя NULL, заключается в том, что вы не присвоили значение для custTotal, следовательно, указатель NULL при попытке преобразовать в двойное значение здесь 

double current = Double.valueOf(String.valueOf(getTotal()))

Что, в свою очередь, вызывает

public BigDecimal getTotal(){return custTotal;} // custTotal is null still

РЕШЕНИЕ

В вашем конструкторе присвойте custTotal = 0; 

 Tab(){
     custTotal = new BigDecimal(0);
 }

Также здесь вы все еще столкнетесь с проблемой 

this.custTotal = BigDecimal.valueOf(Long.parseLong(current + price));

Поскольку цена по-прежнему равна String, и вы пытаетесь добавить double и string, что не удастся, смените ее на нижеприведенную, и она будет работать 

 double dPrice = Double.valueOf(price);
 this.custTotal = BigDecimal.valueOf(current + dPrice);
