bzip2 в пути, но не найден при установке R

Я пытался установить R версию 3.5.3. Когда я настроил это не удалось на шаге bzip2. последние несколько строк подробного текста приведены ниже: 

checking for BZ2_bzlibVersion in -lbz2... yes
checking bzlib.h usability... yes
checking bzlib.h presence... yes
checking for bzlib.h... yes
checking if bzip2 version >= 1.0.6... no
checking whether bzip2 support suffices... configure: error: bzip2 library and headers are required

Я проверил, что bzip2 находится в пути и его версия 1.0.8. 

which bzip2
/usr/local/bin/bzip2

Почему не смог т R найти bzip2 хотя бы в пути? Заранее спасибо.
