Нарушение ограничения уникального ключа

Я использую Grails и получаю следующее при попытке создать новый EducationType в моем контроллере

Как вообще возможно, что я получаю такое сообщение, если в моем контроллере настроено следующее для создания этих объектов: 

class EducationType //the class

  {
      name(blank:false, unique:true)
  }
}

//the block of code to do checking to not create duplicates
          if(EducationType.findByName(type.toString())){
          edType = EducationType.findByName(type.toString())
          }else {
              edType = new EducationType(name:type)  
          }

Я бы предложил изменить ваше ограничение 

  static constraints = 
  {
      name(blank:false, nullable:false, unique:true)
  }

Я бы также изменил код на 

   if ( type == null ) {
     // error handle, i think null will set the value
     // of the type to the string "null" and that will get 
     // saved
     return
   } 


   if( EducationType.findByName(type?.toString()) )
      edType = EducationType.findByName(type.toString())
   } else {
      edType = new EducationType(name:type)  
  }
...
