Ubuntu 12.04 здесь: ответы здесь помогли, но также вводили в заблуждение.

Если вы используете Ubuntu 12.04, НЕ устанавливайте readline, с или без --skip-autoreconf. После того, как вы это сделаете, readline или zlib будут прерваны независимо от того, какую комбинацию переключателей вы дадите rvm install 1.9.3.

Чтобы заставить его работать, выполните установку apt-get, которую rvm requirements вам скажет, выполните pkg uninstall readline, а затем выполните простую rvm remove 1.9.3; rvm install 1.9.3

Я боролся с этой же проблемой в Ubuntu 11.10.

В моем случае readline выглядел бы правильно, если бы я использовал следующее:

$ rvm --skip-autoreconf pkg install readline

как указано в нижней части http://beginrescueend.com/packages/readline/

Однако, когда я вызывал irb, я получал обычную ошибку «Невозможно требовать readline»
