Я бы даже согласился с тем, что в большинстве случаев с комбинированным окном обычно не требуется виртуализация, поскольку в нем не должно быть столько элементов, а если есть необходимость в группировке, то должно быть реализовано какое-то решение с мастер-детализацией. Мне очень помогла ссылка, предоставленная Люком о группировке и виртуализации в MSDN. В моем случае это был единственный подход, который я смог найти или найти где-нибудь в нужном мне направлении. Он не поддерживает все функции из ListViewCollection. Мне пришлось переопределить несколько методов, иначе выбор элементов не будет работать правильно. Очевидно, есть еще много работы.

Часть XAML остается такой же, как в примере кода. Представление модели остается без изменений, что означает использование FlatGroupListCollectionView и настройку GroupDescription.
Я предпочитаю это решение, потому что оно отделяет логику группировки от моего списка данных в модели представления. Другим решением было бы реализовать поддержку группировки по оригинальному списку элементов в модели представления, что означает как-то идентифицировать заголовки. Для однократного использования это должно быть хорошо, но коллекцию, возможно, придется воссоздать для другой цели или без группировки, что не очень хорошо.
