Я хочу уменьшить площадь графика, чтобы было больше места для ggrepel этикеток, которые в настоящее время обрезаются.Кажется, я не могу больше смещать метки с помощью nudge_x(), и я не хочу уменьшать размер текста.

Если вы хотите изменить свой подход, вы можете сделать большой переход и использовать текст, который вы используете, в качестве меток в качестве меток оси. Вы можете воспользоваться вторичной осью для создания отдельных надписей для каждой стороны графика, поэтому все будет очень похоже на то, что вы делаете сейчас.

Преимущество, которое я вижу в этом, заключается в том, что текст подходит, потому что теперь он является частью оси.

Сначала вот пример использования rank в качестве фактора. Вы должны преобразовать коэффициент во что-то числовое через as.numeric(), чтобы получить дублированные оси (пока у дискретных осей нет вторичных осей). Затем нужно проделать определенную работу, чтобы получить разрывы и метки для оси на каждой стороне, поэтому я переместил манипуляции с данными на второй шаг (и в качестве переупорядоченного фактора сделаю rank2 для простоты выполнения breaks позже).

Обратите внимание также на использование expand в scale_x_discrete() для удаления пространства по краям области панели.

Один из вариантов - сохранить график как объект (p), а затем использовать аргумент set_panel_size в пакете egg, чтобы явно установить высоту и ширину панели (как это сделано в этого ответа ). Нечто подобное сближает:
